DATA DICTIONARY (METADATA)

Although the MARIS web site is designed for a general audience; the data that are available for direct downloading are intended for persons that have some familiarity with geographic information systems (GIS); especially in terms of geographic projections, mapping, and software.

The standard projection for all data distributed is the Mississippi Transverse Mercator (MSTM) but MARIS also distributes most data in Latitude/Longitude.

The two available formats, Arc/Info export files (ARC) and ArcView shape files (AV), are those most frequently used in Mississippi state government and are the most commonly requested overall. If you need these data in another format (such as DXF or ERDAS), require additional assistance, or have any other questions, please feel free to contact the MARIS Technical Center at (601) 432-6128.

Over 80 data layers are available to be downloaded in a wide variety of formats. Check the Quick List of Coverages to find out what data is available. However, due to size limitations, some available files and/or formats are not currently online. These orders need to be made using the ONLINE ORDER FORM.

REMEMBER most of the data listed on the QUICK LIST are available online. Please call or email if you have any questions.
